Port Charlotte is a relatively new community developed in the late 1950's. It encompasses the unincorporated area of Charlotte County and is comprised mostly of single family homes with a spattering of condos and town homes. Charlotte County has an area of approximately 820 square miles and a population of approximately 157,000 (2004).

Port Charlotte offers a small town nature but has a multitude of shopping and other big city advantages.  Starting just North of the Town Center Mall, the retail and business centers follow Tamiami Trail, Hwy 41, South for several miles to Punta Gorda.  The Largest Home Depot in Florida was recently built in Port Charlotte.

Affordable saltwater home sites have brought many to the Port Charlotte area. The result was that Port Charlotte became one of the fastest growing areas of Charlotte Country during the late 1990s and early 2000s.  You'll find modern new homes popping up everywhere now.  Many canal front homes have unobstructed access to the harbor making these homes sought after by sailboat owners.  Port Charlotte saltwater homes can be found in a range of prices from 350K to well over $1,000,0000.

North and east of Hwy 41, canal front homes no longer provide River or Gulf access.  These freshwater canals are still sought after by many that like the idea of having water access as a feature in their backyard.  Some canals are quite long and many property owners have docks.  Canoeing and kayaking has become popular throughout Charlotte County with several Kayak clubs and even an annual Kayak festivals available to enthusiasts.

Port Charlotte is located North of the Peace River and has access to Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf of Mexico via a series of canals and waterways that total more than 165 miles in length. There are miles of natural shoreline bordering the Harbor and rivers, making it an ideal choice for waterfront living. Port Charlotte offers recreational activities for every lifestyle, including golf courses, yacht clubs, parks, and more.

Port Charlotte on a larger scale is right between Fort Myers to the south and Venice/Sarasota to the North.  Englewood lies on the Coast to the Southwest and North Port sit immediately to the North.  Port Charlotte has two fine hospitals with many more close by in Englewood, Punta Gorda, Venice and Sarasota.

Popular local boating and fishing destinations include the Myakka and Peace Rivers, Charlotte Harbor, Boca Grande Pass and the Gulf of Mexico, Cayo Costa, Punta Gorda's Fisherman's village, the Intracoastal Waterway, Captiva, Sanibel Island, Englewood Beach, Venice Beach and Cabbage Key.
